The Legend of Phanagor
Once upon an ancient time, when the former glory of the ancient Greece had already sunk into oblivion, Greek refugees from the Isle of Theos in the Ionic sea arrived to the banks of the River Kuban (then – Hyppanis) fleeing from the Persian King Kir’s advancing warriors.
Phanagor was the first to have brought noble Greek vines here; and he kept on planting them, tenderly, but assiduously, on his new homeland. Finally, he was rewarded for his endeavours with excellent wine so much reminding his beloved faraway Greece. Phanagor was not only a winemaker, but also a healer, an expert on herbs and potions that cured his compatriots from most painful diseases. Once, when Phanagor was out of the city, there happened a strong wind that dispersed his medical herbs and broke his ceramic vessels-pithoses full of wine. Only one vessel survived, but the wind blew some dry herbs – John’swort and origan – into it. Upon coming back, Phanagor was surprised, for when he tasted the wine from the surviving vessel, he found it so rich in flavour. Yet he got even more surprised the following morning when he felt that all the fatigue of his long journey had vanished. This was how Phanagor discovered the secret of his magic wine, and since then Phanagorian wines made from white grapes have been known as “White Healer”, and those from red grapes – “Black Healer”.

I was surprised how recognisable the Russian realia appeared to me - the look of Krasnodar, the villages, vineyards and much of the cellars I inspected. But let me tell you one very vivid impression of mine: it is the exposition of the Taman Archaeological Museum. You know, I have been travelling a lot, so i cannot help retaining good impressions of the people, countries and wines I am meeting. But the 26 centuries of Taman history (including that of the ancient Greek winemaking) have become a zest of my trip. I could not imagine that your region has

Russian winemaking has very ancient and deep roots. Such varieties as Tsimlansky Black, Plechistik, Krasnostop Zolotovsky, Sibirkovy from the River Don's right bank date back to the mediaeval khazarian empire, while in the taman
Peninsula winemaking had started much earlier: several thousand years ago. i can find subtle mineral tones in best wines from the taman. i believe this may be due to the mud volcanoes known there since pre-historic time.

Fanagoria became the first russian winery to have assimilated the up-to-date winemaking styles and to have learnt to craft fresh, bright, fruity and really tempting wines. this is so much important, for fanagoria is a big-scale business. its management took chances indeed when they decided to launch its top high-end cru lermont extension, but the result did prove its value. now fanagoria has to keep on moving along its chosen way of success which is the narrow path of high quality, and searching for its unique terroirs and styles.

Fanagoria terroirs seem to fit the native burgundy aligote even better than its homeland. To my mind, Fanagoria's aligotm.

«Fanagoria, like other wineries in the south of russia, works in unique natural and climatic conditions. They will be the point of difference between southern Russian and other world wine regions, on condition that Russian wines achieve high quality and become competitive on the international level.»
